"I Never Want Another Woman to Go Through The Terror and Anxiety I Experienced"
I was so scared...
In August of 2020, while the world was grappling with the Covid-19 Pandemic, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer, an extremely aggressive form of cancer. A cancer that was foreign to me at the time, and one that I quickly became painfully familiar with, as it presented me with the fight of my life.
A short time after that I discovered I carried the BRCA 2 gene, a gene that predisposes us to cancer. After 7 surgeries, including a double mastectomy and an oophorectomy, I then found out that the cancer had metastasized to my lymph node, which meant another surgery to remove 7 more lymph nodes. This was when I was informed that I would have to be treated with a highly potent chemotherapy regimen, know as “Red Devil” Chemotherapy. This was the best option to minimize a recurrence of the cancer.
This journey was leaving me shattered, depressed and scared for my life. I was angry and was looking for answers. Why did this happen to me?!? Then in the middle of my darkest hour, I had an epiphany. I accepted my place in life and became determined to view my journey as a launching pad to help others.
Why did I need to show up at the doctor’s office with cancerous tumors before my doctor ordered a BRCA screening. This seemed backward to me and that is what motivated me to drive change through awareness, and help to save others from my journey.
I am blessed to be alive today but I have heard from too many, in cancer support groups, that have lost their mothers, and mothers that have lost their daughters. Sadly, most were not aware of the BRCA gene.
These tragedies, and my story, is why I am presenting the Doolan/BRCA Gene Bill to congress. AND with YOUR support, we can make a lifelong difference for our daughters, and their daughters.
This Doolan/BRCA Bill will allow all woman, once they reach the age of 21 years, to receive a free BRCA screening. This early detection, along with preventative measures will save lives and keep our families whole.
Please join me in passing this critical bill!
